If you’re married to or in a civil partnership with someone who is settled in the UK (for example, a British citizen or someone with indefinite leave to remain), you may be able to apply to live with them here.
UK law treats married spouses and civil partners equally, including same-sex couples and overseas marriages or partnerships that are legally recognised. A successful application usually allows you to stay in the UK for an initial period of 2.5 years, with the possibility of extending your stay and eventually applying for settlement.
To qualify, you’ll need to show:
-
You are both over 18 and in a genuine relationship
-
You intend to live together permanently in the UK
-
You meet the financial and accommodation requirements
-
You meet the English language requirement
Every case is different, and the requirements can be complex. The best next step is to speak with one of our immigration solicitors so we can guide you on your specific situation and the evidence you’ll need.
